» State Controller Says U.I. Recipients To Continue To Receive Checks - Thursday, July 02, 2009

Community Business College has been informed that students who are receiving California Unemployment Insurance (U.I.) Benefits checks will continue to receive those benefits through July. This is in response to concerns that U.I. benefits recipients might be included in those who will start receiving "registered warrants" or, what are commonly referred to as "IOUs," after July 1, 2009, while the state legislature and governor resolve $24 billion in outstanding budget issues.

This is possible because, Individuals receiving unemployment or disability payments will not receive registered warrants from the State. » Google Launches Seach-As-You-Type - Thursday, September 09, 2010

In an effort to keep up with the ever escalating browser wars, Google has rasied the stakes against Microsoft's Bing with a "live" search. As you type, Google "guesses" your search and the search modifies itself as you enter key words. Google perfers to call this "search beforeyou type."  It's claimed to save two or more seconds per search and completely eliminates the "I'm feeling lucky" button. The search as you type feature can be turned off. Google Instant launched after a two-day anticipatory setup with Monday offering bouncing dots making up its logo and then Tuesday with a black and white logo which turned colors as you typed.

» High Tech Gadgets Causing Hearing Concerns - Wednesday, August 18, 2010

A study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that one in five adolescents suffers some significant hearing loss and blames the earbuds so commonly used in personal music players. This follows a report about all the computer and device screens being linked to Computer Vision Syndrome - where eyes staring at screens for an extended period get sore and lose their ability to focus. That's why many schools like Community Business College limit their use during school hours, encourage students to take their regularly scheduled breaks and, while using headsets to listen and speak to the Rosetta Stone e-classroom, use devices at a low volume that don't rest in the ear canal. » Too Many Tech Gadgets Mean Some Youth Forget How To Write - Thursday, August 26, 2010

Overuse of high tech gadgets and gizmos has been blamed for being a distraction to the youth of today but this news article points out that some youth are forgetting how to literally write. Granted, it's mostly focused on Chinese writing which, is known for having a LOT more than 26 characters in its written language, but you get the idea.

Some are so concerned that global communications and technology are causing languages to be lost that they are trying to preserve them, like Rosetta Stone's endangered language project.

» What's Next: A 3-D Printer For Your Computer - Tuesday, April 20, 2010

This is the gadget for the computer person who has everything (almost) - a printer that prints three-dimensional models instead of pages of paper. The way it works is it builds up layer after layer of a plastic film just like a regular printer would but the "document" doesn't move so it "prints" vertically instead of horizontally. Prices are a bit steep at $15,000 so mostly engineers and large companies will buy them to make prototypes, but who knows what will happen to the price in just a few years. Click HERE to read more

» Are Work E-mails Ever Considered "Private?" - Tuesday, April 06, 2010

When we send personal e-mails using work e-mail accounts, are they private communications? This article explores a new court ruling that tests whether employees can expect even attorney-client e-mails to be private if they use their employer's laptop, computer server, and/or e-mail accounts. This leads to important legal questions. Click HERE to read more

» An Overhaul of the Title IV Financial Aid System - Wednesday, January 20, 2010

A proposed new law which passed the House of Representatives on September 17, 2009 would completely change how student loans are made under the U.S. student loan programs. Under this law, the federal government would take over all the lending duties from banks and other financial institutions. If passed, it would be one of the biggest changes in the U.S. Title IV student aid law since the law was first passed in 1965.

» New Printer Hits $5 Ink Cartridge Target - Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Lexmark won the 2010 Consumer Electronic Show Innovations Award for making an inkjet printer with replacement black ink printer cartridges that list for $5 each. This flies in the face of the "give away the razor, charge for blades" business model so famously used by King C. Gillette, inventor of the disposable safety razor and founder of Gillette Safety Razor Company.

One warning - the other color ink cartridges are a little higher in price and need to be bought seperately which adds to the total cost, but the $5 black cartridge is a breakthrough, making the ink cost about 1 cent per page printed.

This might be the answer to the high costs of cartridges and may even give refilling cartridges a run for its money. Community Business College uses the services of our neighbor, LaserTone, for refilled cartrdiges to save money and waste, but even Costco is getting into the ink cartridge refill act.
